SOWING SEEDS THAT CULTIVATE COMMUNITY

We (probably like you and a multitude of others) have had to postpone, cancel, and/or rethink our summer plans in the wake of concerns and fears over the spread of COVID-19. For our family, specifically, it has meant foregoing our typical Summer Mission travel plans.

In the midst of staying home this summer, God has has been good to lead us into some new ministry opportunities right around us. He has also been providing fresh vision for what the upcoming Fall season of ministry might hold for us and the Oikos Project.

Over the past several months, our home has become a hub of connection and community in our neighborhood. By faith, we began meeting with other believers in our neighborhood for an Oikos Community group. This gathering was started, in part, to meet some of the real need of social connection and fellowship as many of us have not been allowed to go to normal Sunday services at our respective churches. Another important purpose of this Oikos Community group has been (and will continue to be) a place where we can encourage and resource one another in finding ways to be salt and light on our streets, amongst our neighbors, and throughout our city.

God has connected us with a number of people in our community that we hadn’t normally interacted with, but because they have been “quarantined” at home, it provided us the opportunity to finally meet them. We’ve been able to take meals and gifts to several of these families as well as newcomers in our neighborhood to encourage them in these tumultuous times.

Again, all of this is done with a heart for weaving a fabric of love and care in the places where we live. As this fabric comes together and as seeds are planted, we are seeing more and more opportunities every day to enter into spiritual conversation with others, demonstrate the Gospel, and share about our faith in God!

As we approach the coming Fall season with so many unknowns, we know that God is preparing the soil around us and providing fresh opportunities to bless others and cultivate our community. With this vision before us, we are asking others to partner with us in seeing these things become a reality.
